Map Interpretation

Very High Rainfall (>1500 mm):The highest rainfall is concentrated along the Western Ghats, Northeastern India, and parts of the Himalayan foothills. These regions receive intense monsoon rainfall due to orographic uplift and strong moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. 

Moderate Rainfall (500–1500 mm): Large parts of Central India, the Indo-Gangetic Plain, and sections of the Eastern Plateau experience moderate rainfall, supporting agriculture and replenishing rivers and reservoirs.

Low Rainfall (<500 mm):Low precipitation is observed in Western Rajasthan, the cold desert region of Ladakh, and parts of the rain-shadow region east of the Western Ghats. These areas receive limited rainfall due to geographical and climatic factors.

  • Rainfall generally decreases from the west coast towards northwestern India.

  • The Western Ghats act as a natural barrier, causing heavy rainfall on the windward side and reduced rainfall on the leeward side.

  • The Northeastern states receive some of the highest rainfall in the world because of moist monsoon winds and mountainous terrain.
